What Is Microblading?

Microblading is a semipermanent eyebrow makeup technique used to create the illusion of fuller, hyperrealistic brows.

The process is very precise and involves using a sloped blade with 10-12 needles to create hundreds of tiny strokes. Each stroke implants a medical grade pigment on the skin’s epidermis layer, gradually building a texture that mimics your natural eyebrow hair.

For many, semipermanent makeup has become a hassle-free solution to spending hours pencilling in their brows. Professionally done eyebrows also open up the possibility to create almost any look: from a very natural light finish to a beautifully bold brow.

What sets this method apart is that beautiful brow shapes are created based on each client’s natural face shape and bone structure. This results in a totally bespoke approach for each client.

How Is Microblading Your Eyebrows Different From Having Them Tattooed?

Unlike traditionally tattooed eyebrows, which can go almost seven layers deep into the skin, a delicate blade is used to scratch the skin’s surface—more like a paper cut—resulting in fine hair strokes that are only about two layers deep.

The hair strokes are far more natural-looking and more delicate than any tattoo because a handheld needle/blade is used.

Does Microblading Hurt?

While the blade’s sensation—a small scratching sound—can be off-putting for some and feels different than a traditional tattoo, it is much quieter than a tattoo gun, involves fewer needles and will most likely hurt less.

Most of your appointment time is actually taken up, waiting for the numbing agent (a topical anesthetic) applied before the procedure to take effect. After that, the whole process is very quick and painless.

How Long Does Microblading Last?

Microblading is semi-permanent, so the colour will fade within 12-18 months, which is a big part of the appeal.

However, the longevity of the pigment will depend on your skin type. People with slightly more oily skin will tend to last around the 12-month mark before needing a touch-up, but those with less oily skin can last up to 18 months.

How Much Does Microblading Cost?

A Chely’s Art microblading treatment costs $350 for the consultation and initial treatment. However, most of my clients opt for a Microblading touch-up after about 6-8 weeks to keep their brows at peak performance.

Can Microbladed Eyebrows Be Undone/Removed?

Yes – the pigment used leaves no scarring or discolouration. If you don’t continue with touch-ups every 18 months or so, your brows will eventually fade away.

* It is very important to know that brows will be up to 40% darker in shade for the first two weeks during the healing process, where scabs can form and flake off. After 7-10 days, you will begin to see the final colouring.
